Summer Wellness Made Simple

Summer is right around the corner, and that means warm weather, vacations, camping, grilling, and plenty of amazing food. With so many fun activities and changes to your routine, it can sometimes feel challenging to stay focused on your health, nutrition, and movement goals.

The good news? A healthy summer does not have to mean missing out. With a few simple habits, you can enjoy the season while still feeling energized, balanced, and confident. Keep reading for tips on how to maintain a healthy balance all summer long.

Hydrate
Proper hydration is especially important during the hot summer months. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, fatigue, increased hunger, and other health concerns.

Prioritize water or unsweetened beverages over soda, juice, or other drinks that may contain added sugar and extra calories. Try starting your day with a glass of water and keeping a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day. For a refreshing boost of flavor, add sliced lemon, lime, cucumber, mint, or berries to your water.

Incorporate Activity
Movement is a great way to support a healthy lifestyle, and summer weather offers plenty of opportunities to get active outdoors. Instead of thinking of exercise as something that has to happen only in the gym, look for fun ways to move throughout the day.

Active outings such as walking, swimming, hiking, biking, kayaking, frisbee, mini-golf, sailing, or even a game of catch are great ways to combine fun and movement. The goal is to stay consistent while enjoying the activities that make summer special.

Focus on Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are a great way to add nutrients, fiber, color, and volume to your meals. They can also help you feel fuller and more satisfied throughout the day.

Keep fresh fruits and vegetables available at home and try to incorporate them into each meal. A simple goal is to make half of your plate fruits and vegetables whenever possible. The more variety and color you include, the more likely you are to get a range of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Try the rainbow challenge: can you enjoy a rainbow of colorful produce throughout the week?

Use Smart Snacks
Snacks can help balance hunger, stabilize energy, and prevent overeating later in the day. A smart snack includes fiber, protein, and/or healthy fat to help keep you satisfied. Try combinations like:

  • Cheese, whole wheat crackers, and berries
  • Greek yogurt with fruit
  • Apple slices with peanut butter
  • Veggies with hummus
  • Nuts and berries
  • Dark or milk chocolate with nuts for a satisfying sweet treat

Make Healthy Substitutions When Dining Out
Summer often means more meals out, cookouts, and social gatherings. Instead of feeling like you have to avoid your favorite foods, try making small swaps that help create a more balanced meal.

For example, if you love a burger, enjoy it with roasted vegetables or a side salad instead of fries. If you really want the onion rings, pair them with a grilled protein like chicken, salmon, or shrimp. These small choices allow you to enjoy your meal while still supporting your goals.

Enjoy the Season

Healthy living is all about balance, not perfection. Summer is meant to be enjoyed, and your health goals can still fit into vacations, cookouts, celebrations, and fun days outdoors.

Focus on staying hydrated, moving your body, adding colorful foods to your plate, choosing satisfying snacks, and making small swaps when it makes sense. These simple habits can help you feel your best while still enjoying everything the season has to offer.
