Certification: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

Ken is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as well as a Certified Group Cycling Instructor from Mad Dogg Athletics and Keiser. He received his BA in Music from the University of Delaware and a Master’s in Education from Harvard University.
Ken has been a member of Waverley Oaks since 1998 and has been a Cycle Instructor since 2004. He was also a licensed Massage Therapist with the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) from 1987-1998.

Ken can work with all adult ages and genders but has a particular fondness for working with those new or returning to exercise, those looking to lose weight, older exercisers and anyone looking to train for endurance-based events. His training with his clients is based around building a strong cardiovascular foundation while incorporating strength, balance, and flexibility/mobility. Ken’s favorite exercises are running or cycling because of all the mental and physical benefits both activities can provide. They can be done fast or slow, in a group or alone, competitively or for fun and they are a great way to explore/discover new places. In his free time, Ken enjoys outdoor road cycling, running, strength training, traveling to new and favorite old spots, music (singing/jazz/classical), cooking and eating, and playing with his Golden Retriever.

Philosophy on Training:

Fitness training is about much more than just physical exercise. It is a continual learning process that encompasses mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing and is accessible to EVERYONE regardless of age, background, or physical condition.

As a Personal Trainer, Ken sees himself as a partner in his clients’ respective fitness journeys. The first step is establishing a starting point through assessments, corrective exercise, and goal setting to give direction to the training. From there, a safe, specific, and sustainable exercise plan will be established to get “from here to there” while having A LOT of FUN along the way.

In many parts of life, growth and progress often arise from stepping into scary places and Ken realizes that many people do not feel like they belong in a fitness environment. Ken will ensure that you feel comfortable at Waverley Oaks, and it is a place you look forward to coming to versus one you dread visiting. Whether your goal is to run a marathon or simply take that first step into living a more healthy, active lifestyle, Ken will support you during all facets of that journey. For Ken, there is nothing more rewarding than for someone to say “wow, I never thought I would be able to do that”.

Working with Ken has been a joy. He actively solicits feedback on my priorities and how to adjust my workout routine. Ken emphasizes proper form, and he’s taught me how to bring more muscle groups into each exercise. He provides encouragement as I progress, which makes me look forward to future sessions.” – Yolanda, Member Since 2021
